The Need

“Our world is in terrible need of models”
-Bill McKibben (HOPE – Human and Wild)

In 1992, 1,700 of the world's leading scientists, including the majority of Nobel Laureates, signed a "Warning to Humanity" stating that all global eco-systems are in imminent collapse and human survival and all living species are imperiled. Sixteen years later, this critical warning has gone largely ignored. Seemingly everyday, new studies or statistics provide mounting evidence that human activities are causing environmental stress and change urgently needs to occur. Media efforts over the past few years have attempted to increase public awareness of vital environmental issues, but there is lack of consensus amongst politicians and even some scientists about how best to solve these problems.

As time passes with no consensus forming, ReelGreen fears that inaction will only exacerbate an already critical situation. So who will take up the reins to implement effective, real-world solutions? In his latest book Blessed Unrest – Paul Hawkin's puts his faith in the grassroots efforts, of the thousands of existing organizations that are working to make lasting change. (His website WiserEarth.org catalogs over 108,000 grassroots organizations, dedicated to a variety of social and environmental causes, demonstrating the power of grassroots activism.) Yet with potential solutions are everywhere—most non-profit groups (NGOs) have one or more—replicable, effective, and strategic solutions remain elusive, undercapitalized, or largely unrecognized.
Acting as a facilitator and teacher to bring together activists and communities with recognized and accepted solutions, ReelGreen will continue to build coalitions with like-minded individuals and groups that solve local, regional, and global environmental problems.
